Facebook is the most popular social network on the web right now. It’s where people connect with each other. Recently, people have been using the social network for buying and selling with each other.
This buying/selling activity started in local Facebook groups, and it has grown exponentially.
To increase these connections, Facebook officially launched Marketplace, a simple destination where you can discover, buy, and sell items locally.
Facebook Marketplace is a great place where you can discover cool items you want to buy, and find people who are willing to buy your products.

Where to Access Facebook Marketplace?
Marketplace is available in the Facebook mobile app on both iOS and Android platforms. It’s also available on desktops and tablets.
Look for the marketplace icon at the bottom of the mobile app on iOS, or at the top of the app on Android. If you are using Facebook on a desktop web browser, you will find Marketplace icon on the left sidebar of the Facebook page.
How Does Facebook Marketplace Work?
Facebook Marketplace shows you photos of items that people near you are selling. To find any specific item, search the keyword at the top and filter the provided results by location, category, or price.
It also lets you browse all the items that are available in a variety of categories including, but not limited to Household, Electronics, and Clothing.
Use Facebook’s built-in location tool to set the region you are looking in, or switch to a completely different region/city altogether.
When you find an item of interest, click/tap on the photo to see extra details that the seller has provided, including the product description, the name and profile picture of the seller, and their location as well. You can also save that product to see it later.
Once you have decided what, you want. Just send the seller a personal message directly from Marketplace to inform them you are interested in their product and make an offer.
From there, you and the seller can figure out the details of the transaction in any way you desire.
Keep in mind; Facebook does not help with the payments or shipping of the products in Marketplace. So you and the seller have to work out the details on your own.
How to Post Something for Sale on Facebook Marketplace?
To put an item up for sale on Marketplace is as easy as browsing for one. Just follow these simple steps:
- Take a good quality picture of your item, or add it from your camera roll.
- Enter the product’s name, item description, and the price you are looking for.
- Confirm your region/location and choose a category for your item.
- Post, and you are done.
Now, everyone who’s looking for items for sale in your area can see your item and contact you if they are interested in it.
You can also choose to post your product to the Marketplace and a specific buy/sell group at the same time.
Visit the Your Items section in the Marketplace to keep track of all your previous and current transactions. You can also see your saved items, items you have put up for sale, and all your messaging with potential buyers/sellers.
Is Facebook Marketplace Free?
Facebook Marketplace’s major selling point is its utter convenience. Facebook is entirely free to join and there are no fees for selling on the Marketplace either, so it is very low-risk.
Also, most of us use the social network daily anyway for keeping up with our friends/fa mily, it is easy to utilize it for our buying/selling as well.
Facebook Marketplace Vs. Craigslist
Craigslist is a classifieds website where people post their ads for products and services. It’s available locally for multiple regions so locals can buy and sell products without any hassle.
However, Craigslist can be quite unsafe, if you are not careful about the people you are dealing with. There are so many scammers out there trying to rip off your hard earned money.
Facebook Marketplace is a social marketplace where people can connect with each other and hammer down the transaction details.
On Marketplace, you can not only see the product, you can also see the seller’s Facebook profile, your mutual friends (If any), and chat with them via Facebook Messenger.
All of this combined gives a more personal and safer feel to these transactions. However, you still need to do your due diligence to stay safe even on Facebook Marketplace.
Facebook Marketplace Community
Facebook Marketplace is not the only place where you can sell your goods. You can even use private local buying/selling groups to part with your beloved items or buy newer ones.
These groups are similar to the ones you often use for your personal interests. You just join a local group and post your items for sale.
Potential buyers will comment on the post/contact you via messages and you can strike up a good deal.
Make sure to include all the details about the item you are selling in the post. This way interested people will know if it’s what they are looking for.
How to Stay Safe on Facebook Marketplace?
Safety should always be your priority, no matter where you are buying or selling your stuff. When it comes to the World Wide Web, safety should be of utmost importance since there are numerous scammers out there.
First and foremost, look at the rating of the seller. The rating will be available right there in the product ad.
You can also report an ad if it sounds like a scam. You can open the product details and click the Report button right there. Once you submit a report, Facebook will look into it and take appropriate action.
Also, if an ad sounds too good to be true….it almost always is. Never fall for ads that claim to giveaway luxury items and stuff like that.
It’s also a great idea to use cash for these deals. If you use PayPal then the buyer can do a chargeback once they receive the products and you will not be able to dispute that chargeback at all.
So, always do these transactions with cash. Meet the buyer/seller in a public place, to be safe. Check the item thoroughly before handing over the cash, if you are the buyer.
Once you are happy with the transaction, you can rate the buyer/seller directly from the private message thread on the Marketplace.
The buyer and seller have to take care of the transaction themselves. Facebook does not facilitate the transaction at all.
You have to take care of the payment and delivery yourself. So, it’s always a great idea to conduct the transaction in such a way that it’s safe for both the buyer and the seller.
Facebook Marketplace Rules
Facebook wants you to have the best and smooth experience while using Marketplace. If you run into an issue with a person or a product that is listed, such as violating marketplace standards, harassing behavior or downright scams, it is very simple to report it to Facebook.
Just find the Report link on the product detail page, or on the seller/buyer’s Marketplace profile. You can file a report from there.
There are no specific rules for the marketplace, but anything that sounds shady or like a scam should be reported to ensure the safety of all the marketplace users.
Also, there are no Facebook marketplace returns/refund policies at all. Since Facebook doesn’t facilitate the transactions in any way whatsoever, they are not going to help you get a refund either.
You must do your own due diligence and check the products before purchasing. Otherwise, the seller won’t be liable for any returns/refunds for your purchase.
